In 1993, LAWS became the first domestic violence program in Virginia to offer free legal representation to physically-battered women. The availability of a staff attorney has strengthened and empowered survivors of domestic violence by allowing them expert representation in court. LAWS Legal Services offers the following assistance:

• Consultation with the attorney to discuss available legal remedies for women involved in abusive relationships;
• Assistance with filing charges against an abuser;
• Representation for women in obtaining a Protective Order;
• Representation for women in custody, child support, and spousal support hearings;
• Advocacy on behalf of child victims of violence;
• Court accompaniment by a lay advocate;
• Information and referral services.
